Microsoft has been working on its dual-screen Surface device which already called as Project Centaurus, we have already seen this project in earlier this year as Microsoft has already shown a device and its gonna work. Recently Microsoft has teased that they are going to have these devices in the mainstream as their Hardware event is going to be held on 2 Oct in New York. It will be very interesting to see a device in the Surface family.
Microsoft has already gone far beyond from prototype as the company has already started to patenting their next-gen. Surface devise. A new patent has been spotted, it shows that Microsoft is working on a special type hinge mechanism that uses liquid to reduce the stress on flexible and foldable displays. The liquid can be filled inside cavities around the flexible display to help it bend and move into different positions. Microsoft also tries to keep this device more like a laptop because they already trying to remove tablet experience in their upcoming next year Windows 10 update.
Microsoft has always been the focus on the hinge design as their Surface Book already feature a best by far hinge design, and Microsoft constantly making a leap to improve this technology. According to the Patent image, we can say that the device is two separate sides and a flexible OLED display that extends across the entire device. Just like a bigger and better version of Samsung’s Galaxy Fold which finally releases. Hinge designed from Samsung allows foreign particles and debris to stuck inside the hinge which damage the folding of the device. We hope that Microsoft will learn from these mistakes and bring something that is more reliable and better.
One of the most exciting thing about this patent is that it’s been filed by “Microsoft technology licensing” which could mean that Microsoft will allow other OEM to take their design pattern and implement in their device. Lenovo has already been working on their foldable device and Intel also patenting these kinds of stuff so it is interesting to see how Foldable things will improve our future of portability as well as productivity.
All these hardware requires better working software and Windows is evolving to support these kinds of design shift. Microsoft has to implement a better and easier version of Windows to work along with this hardware, Microsoft already working with Intel to bring its new version of Windows, codenamed “Windows Lite” that will run on foldable devices.
So let’s see whether Microsoft is going to bring these patent as actual devices or going to leave their patent in paper like that of Surface Studio patent and even the patent filing of Microsoft Andromeda project which hasn’t even kick-off. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft could bring these feature in the future Surface device, join us for Microsoft news.
