MacBook Pro 2016 First Time Not In User Recommendation List: Apple’s fourth-generation MacBook Pro was released in October 2016 having “Touch Bar” and a Touch ID Sensor with so many expectations. It was most awaited series of MacBook Pro for the Apple’s lover but soon after its release, it starts facing criticism because of its battery life which is not able to meet with the battery life claimed by Apple. Now, Consumer Reports is also not recommending new MacBook Pro for the costumers due to battery life issue found in it.

It is kind of a big surprise for the Apple as it is the first time when any MacBook Pro series doesn’t receive a recommendation from the Consumer Reports. Although it received good remarks in terms of display quality and performance. Three MacBook Pros were tested by the organization:

    • 15 inch model with Touch Bar.
    • 13 inch model with Touch Bar.
    • 13 inch model without Touch Bar.

Results Of Battery Test Of Various Model Of MacBook Pro 2016 By Organisation Are:

    • The 15-inch model had 18.5 hours battery life in one test and after that in the second test it had a battery life of 8 hours.
    • 13 inch Touch Bar Model ran for 16 hours in the first trial after that in the second trial it downs to 12.75 hours and in the third trial, battery life lasts only for 3.75 hours.
    • 13 inch without Touch Bar Model, in one trial, works for 19.5 hours after that in next trial lasts only for 4.5 hours.

These results show high inconsistency in battery life of MacBook Pro from one trial to another. According to Consumer Reports, for the laptops, it is very normal that its battery life may vary from one trial to next by less than 5 percent. But as in the case of MacBook Pro, battery life varies to a large extent which is not so much normal. Variation to that extent in battery life of laptops will definitely not be accepted by users. As battery life is very important for the laptop, MacBook Pro is not succeeded to make its place on the recommendation of Consumer Reports.

Every year hundreds of laptop are tested by Consumer Reports in the highly controlled way. Details of the testing procedure are:

    1. When the battery fully charged, they start to download a series of 10 web pages sequentially and ends when laptop shuts down.

    2. Downloaded web pages are then stored on a server in their lab and transmitted over Wi-Fi network that is set up specifically for that purpose.

    3. In the case of MacBook Pro laptops, the battery test is conducted by using the computer’s default browser- safari.

    • During the test, all the laptop’s screen remains on.
    • Display brightness is set to 100 nits by using an external meter.
    • Any automatic brightness adjustment in the settings is turned off.

Before the beginning of any testing, every computer’s operating system are also get updated as all the kinds of products show variability in performance by a software update. After completing the official testing, Consumer Report experimented by conducting the same battery tests using chrome browser, instead of safari. For this, two trials are conducted in each laptop. Use of chrome in battery testing is actually a good idea because Chrome drains the battery more quickly in MacBook Pro as compared to Safari.

This report is very unusual for the Apple because, in the past, it was well known for giving good battery life even better than claimed battery life by Apple as you can see in MacBook Air, MacBook, iPad, iPad Pro & so on. In earlier testing of Consumer Reports on Previous MacBook Pro model, it had more battery life than claimed by Apple.

In the past, Consumer Reports was always favorable for the Apple. Apple’s tech support was always get praised from Consumer Reports. This time unfortunately because of its battery issue, MacBook Pro was slipped down on the recommendation list. Let’s hope this issue resolved as soon as possible so that MacBook Pro could again get a recommendation from Consumer Reports.
