In July, Apple announced the deal with Intel for its smartphone modem worth at $1 million and now Intel has announced that “it is completed the sale of the majority of the company’s smartphone modem to Apple”. According to Reuters, Intel also claimed that it is still a “multi-billion dollar loss” for the company.
Apple Deal With Intel For 5G Modem Worth $1 Million
When the deal was done in July, near about 2,200 Intel employees joined Apple to work on the smartphone modem. From this deal, it is clear that Apple acquires a large portfolio of wireless patents from Intel and Apple holds near about 17,000 wireless technology patents, which includes protocols for cellular standard, modem architecture and modem operation.
After this Intel will continue to manufacture modems for other devices like PCs, internet of things devices, autonomous vehicles. It is expecting that Apple will use Qualcomm modems for its upcoming 5G iPhone models, which will first of its kind produce by Apple. Apart from this, Apple is also planning to develop its own modem for the iPhones by the year 2022-23.
