AI-Equipped Kirin 970 Processor Unveiled By Huawei At IFA 2017: During this IFA in Berlin, Huawei at last unveiled its new processor which is meant for the upcoming Huawei Mate 10. At the press conference on 2nd of September, Huawei’s CEO i.e Richard Yu took charge to officially announce the new Kirin 970 chipset that will get featured with the upcoming smartphone from the company. The Kirin 970 is focussed on AI with an Octa-core chip that is built on a 10nm process like other chipset manufacturers with competing internals from Qualcomm, Samsung and MediaTek & having 5.5 billion transistors & a 12-core GPU. The new NPU i.e Neutral Processing Unit) though will be able to deliver 25 times greater performance with 50 times the power efficiency of a Quad-core Cortex-A73 cluster (i.e Kirin 960).
Kirin 970 Processor To Power Huawei Mate 10, Announced:
However there are also some great leaps in wireless capabilities with a new one of the world’s 4.5G LTE modem that supports Cat 18 and download speeds up to 1.2Gbps. With these expansive wireless technologies, Huawei expects its future phones will support dual SIM cards at 4G without compromises. The company although focused much of its press conference on the chip’s new dual image processing engine that will support 4K HDR 10 video among many other features, showing the Kirin 970’s NPU crunching images 20 times as fast as a CPU, and emphasized how combining cloud-based AI and on-device AI can help to balance power efficiency and latency.
Other major updated features with the new chipset include a new dual ISP that support improved noise reduction, 4-way hybrid autofocus & much more improved without motion blur capturing of the moving objects. It is the first ARM Mali-G72 GPU, featuring improved performance and efficiency, and a 12-core design. Having a new 4.5G modem with 5CC carrier aggregation, 4x4MIMO, 256QAM, for up to 1.2Gbps speeds at Cat. 18. More simply we can say that the Kirin 970 can perform the same AI computing tasks faster and with far less power. In a benchmark image recognition test, the Kirin 970 processed 2,000 images per minute, which was faster than other chips on the market.
According to the company Huawei is committed to developing smart devices into intelligent devices by building end-to-end capabilities that support coordinated development of chips, devices, and the cloud. The ultimate goal is to provide a significantly better user experience. The Kirin 970 is the first in a series of new advances that will bring powerful AI features to our devices and take them beyond the competition. The CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group i.e Richard Yu also said “As we look to the future of smartphones, we’re at the threshold of an exciting new era”.
The company’s previous VP for Handset Business i.e Bruce Lee also confirmed that for the first time, Huawei Mate 10 will be using the chip & will be getting appeared at an event in Munich, Germany on October 16 so in this case we can also expect the Huawei P11 to be having the same chipset when it arrives.
