Android made its debut with Android 1.0 also duped as Alpha on September 23, 2008, since then every new release of Android brought some holistic enhancements and improvements over its predecessor. This year we are about to witness Android 11 which is currently residing in the development and testing phase. As we all know that the development process of the world’s most loved operating system is very transparent and audience engagement plays a great role in the development process, Every stable release of Android have to go through some rigors testing by users, developers, and beta testers, Google releases four developers preview along with three beta releases before releasing the stable version for the same.
We captured some amazing features and functionality of Android 11 via. Its developer previews and in this article we would compare them with its elder sibling Android 10. So, without wasting any more time let’s boot into it.
Android 11 vs Android 10: The Battle Begins
1. Enhanced and Immersive Dark-Mode
We have seen a revolutionary change amongst mindsets of smartphone users as nowadays everyone wants to be on the dark side and prefer dark mode over the traditional, shiny, and punchy light mode. Dark mode got its own merits like increased battery life, less strain on eyes along with an added bonus of contrasting and minimal look.
If you prefer using a different style approach depending upon the time of the day similar to those movies in which you play the role of a corporate but as the day sets out you turn into a street fighter and you want to use your Android smartphone in similar approach then Android 11 got you covered with it’s “Scheduled Dark Mode” using this functionality you can easily command your smartphone to change its look depending upon the time of day or set timer.
2. Bubbling It Out
Most of you guys remember the chat bubble from Facebook Messanger, The pop-up bubble that floats over your smartphone screen showing off various active chat windows and you can dismiss it by holding it from the edge of the screen and then dragging and dropping it over the close button. This chat bubble feature posed some difficulties when used with gesture navigation on Android 10 devices as it featured ‘Swipe From Edge’ gesture for the previous window and while holding and dragging the chat bubble from the edge accidental activation of back gesture became way too common and thus leading to inconvenience.
But with the release of Android 11, Google is planning to make the use of chat bubble functionality more of a common practice by releasing an API for the same. Google has informed developers to start using the bubbles API, so once Android 11 ships, apps should be making use of the tool.
3. Only This Time
Google wants to buck-up the security department ever since its first stable release and with Android 10 we saw implication of a better permission menu, whenever an app asks for permission to utilize some system properties and location access, Android 10 allows you to choose from three options i.e. ‘Always Allow’, ‘Allow while using the app’, and ‘Deny’. This method of permission management gave the charge to the user instead of the app, but this is going to get even more dynamic and responsive with the addition of the “Only This Time” option into the permission menu that will strengthen the security department.
4. The Waving Hand
With the arrival of the Pixel 4 series, we saw the first-ever radar sensor on a smartphone. This sensor enabled the users to navigate through media playback without even physically touching the device, not only playback but it also enhanced the unlocking process as it was capable of automatically sensing that someone is around and about to unlock the device thus autonomously engaging the sensors to activate the unlocking process. With Android 11, Google wants to make use of this functionality in other departments as well.
5. Undoing The Swipe
If you ever swiped up the wrong app from the recent menu and regretted it afterward then Android 11 could become a life-saver for you, as recent developers preview of Android 11 included a feature in its recent menu that enables you to undo the accidental swipe-up from the recent menu.
As you remove an app from the recent menu, an undo button pops out simultaneously enabling you to reconstruct your mistake, This feature was not even thought for Android 10. This feature only works for a single app–the most recently dismissed app. Along with this, the Recents feature has been redesigned with larger app previews and new shortcuts including Screenshot and Share.
6. Dismiss The Ongoing Notification
Every app and operation wants some part of notification shade and this can be a headache sometimes. Although some notifications can be dismissed with a single swipe of finger while some of the ongoing notification brings out the real crap out of Android OS, this may include various notification from Hotspot, Setup guide, and Bluetooth sharing. You can’t get rid of these notification till Android 10, but Android 11 brought up a function that can help you to get rid of those notification thus making your notification shade crystal clear.
