The tablet market is always been hard to grasp as a tablet requires to be the portable, long battery life, larger display and need to use less power. All these features require a unique device as these tasks can’t perform from a smartphone as well from the laptop. Tablet business is still monopolized by Apple’s iPad as Apple is the first company who found success with this business. In 2011 Microsoft introduces their approach to the tablet market and their take on this amazing by the inclusion of full Windows in their device but as time passes the fight between Apple and Microsoft become tougher.
But it is hard to deny that Microsoft letting its tablet mode die on their device. As recently release insider version of Windows 10 remove the tablet tile like startup menu, Microsoft also trying to remove their start menu and bring older Windows 7 type approach. Microsoft has filed to implement Tablet like feature to their device as we called Surface Pro 6 as a hybrid between tablet and laptop but as compared with iPad Pro it has many true tablet-like approaches from Gesture to Application environment which can’t implement by Microsoft Surface.
Microsoft Surface Pen may resolve some problem but we can comfortably use Surface Pro with our fingers. Windows Tablet mode is a feature which can able to transform your device more like Tablet with larger icon, bigger startup menu and so on. But this feature also doesn’t evolve which made Microsoft to slowly remove this feature.
Many Application on Windows 10 Store also has more PC like interface rather than having the option of Tablet mode. Apple recently solves this problem in their recent iteration of iOS 13 with a project called a Catalyst which trying to close the gap between iOS and macOS apps. Apple will bring allow every iPadOS app to migrate its app to macOS without having to write too much code.
Discussion between iPad and Surface Pro may keep ongoing but these devices are capturing different market taste. Microsoft also introduces Surface Go, the perfect sized tablet in comparison to iPad but the implementation of Windows is more like PC which causes this device to suffer in terms of capturing market attention.
Tablet mode in Windows was introduced way back in the time of Windows 8 and 8.1 but the interface may face many drawbacks in terms of PC user are iCons become larger and their many blank spaces left to use which made Microsoft change their Tablet approach toward more PC like experience.
Even though Windows 8 got many backlashes but their tablet approach may give Microsoft more edge in the Tablet market. Microsoft also introduces a touch mode which also doesn’t go too far. It simply makes windows touch screen device more touch-friendly but tablet level optimization has been lost. Microsoft also never pushed their level to Windows 8 tablet approach.
Another reason why Microsoft stops developing tablet-oriented feature because in the market we can now find cheaper tablet as compared with Microsoft’s Windows devices which charge a premium price. People also like easy to use interface while using smartphone or tablet Windows 10 complex mouse approach may result in many users to shift to other brands or ecosystem. Apple’s iPadOS is the path of defining how future of tablet will look like without hybridizing the tablet and laptop.
Apple hasn’t thought to bring touch approach to their desktop and never bring laptop approach to their tablet which made them capture both markets respectably. Apple Pencil really made improvement the way people interact with their tablet although this feature was earlier made available by Microsoft but the implementation is great. New iPadOS with new feature like improved multitasking, plugging external storage device, sidecar various other feature really improve the iPad’s productivity.
Samsung’s approach towards this business also to keep the smartphone and PC separate with Samsung DeX Pad which really trying to bridge the gap between PC and Smartphone. The setup requires less accessory (mouse, keyboard, and display) you can also connect to your existing Windows or Mac device with just plugging charging cable.
Many traditional approaches toward tablet develop now have been dead as we think of tablet for bing watching, reading books or making notes but now tablet can do much more than ever before. Microsoft may be ditching its original vision for tablet mode, but it’s not the only one. The idea of tablets as a large phone style form factor is dying, replaced by a breed of tablets that are moving towards laptop-style productivity. Microsoft already has the market on that, so it doesn’t make sense to invest further in the old style tablet mode. If Microsoft to stop dying their tablet market they have to push the developer to develop better apps rather than making entertainment and news apps.
